Newcastle City Council has identified the “Empathy”
tag on 35 surfaces along Hunter St. The number is closer to
65 surfaces as Graffiti X has removed the “Empathy”
tag from another 30 surfaces as part of its sponsorship of Newcastle
East Graffiti removal campaign.
Many of the “Empathy” tags as well as other graffiti
were removed from public phone booths, street & heritage
signs, bus shelters, Newcastle Port Authority murals and East
Newcastle City Council properties.
Graffiti vandals have especially targeted Pacific Park. Last
Monday, 4 August, Mr Peter Siegmund the managing director of
Graffiti X, spent two hours removing the “Empathy”
tags from a variety of Newcastle East council properties.
Peter Siegmund states:
“When I proposed this Newcastle East graffiti removal
sponsorship to Newcastle City Council, I had no idea that the
project would be such a gruelling and ongoing battle to contain
the graffiti rampage.”
Graffiti vandalism - the wilful marking, spraying or writing
of a surface without the owner’s consent is a crime punishable
by a jail term, monetary fine, and/or community service. Severe
penalties under the Crimes Act 1900 and Summary Offences Act
1988 are in place to deal with graffiti vandalism.
Peter Siegmund urges Newcastle law enforcement bodies and private
residents to be vigilant in combating this vandalism and bringing
the criminals to justice.
Graffiti X is a Newcastle based company that offers ecofriendly
products and responsive help, graffiti patrols, advice and graffiti
removal services. Its competitive advantage is “removing
and repairing graffiti from most surfaces leaving no shadows
or damage”. The owner Peter Siegmund, has been directly
involved in Graffiti monitoring and removal throughout NSW for
about 15 years.
