Newcastle City Council has identified Graffiti Removal as a top priority. About six months ago Graffiti X approached Newcastle City Council to sponsor graffiti removal at Newcastle East and this sponsorship was ratified by Newcastle City Council.

As part of this sponsorship, the war memorial was cleaned this morning as well as on previous occasions. During the last six months Graffiti X has removed $20,000 worth of graffiti on Council properties free of charge to Council.

In addition, graffiti was removed from public phone booths, street & heritage signs, bus shelters, Newcastle Port Authority murals and the Boathouse Horseshoe Beach.

The Newcastle City graffiti attacks have demanded a full time commitment that Graffiti X cannot make because it now has to earn money by travelling to Sydney to remove graffiti.

Peter Siegmund states:

“When I proposed this Newcastle East graffiti removal sponsorship to Newcastle City Council, I had no idea that the project would be such a gruelling and ongoing battle to contain the graffiti rampage.”

Graffiti vandalism - the wilful marking, spraying or writing of a surface without the owner’s consent is a crime punishable by a jail term, monetary fine, and/or community service. Severe penalties under the Crimes Act 1900 and Summary Offences Act 1988 are in place to deal with graffiti vandalism.

Peter Siegmund urges Newcastle law enforcement bodies, council and private residents to be vigilant in combating this vandalism and bringing the criminals to justice.
